La Rabida Children’s Hospital is hiring a full-time  Spanish Language - Medical Interpreter for our Patient Care Administration/Outpatient Care Services department in Chicago, IL.

Job Summary:

La Rabida is currently recruiting a full-time Medical Interpreter (Spanish Language) to join our Patient Care Administration/Outpatient Care Services department in Chicago, IL. We are a small children’s acute care hospital focused on treating complex medical conditions, chronic illnesses, developmental disabilities, and abuse and trauma.

The Spanish Language-Medical Interpreter provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients and communicating with parents/caregivers who cannot speak or understand English.

  Essential Medical Interpreter Functions: 

  • Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient's native language
  • Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
  • Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.
  • Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patient caregivers with appointment reminders.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with La Rabida Children’s Hospital policies and standards.
  • Provides occasional services outside of normal working hours on an as-needed basis.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

What we need from you:  

  • Education:  High School diploma or GED; a certificate in medical interpretation is preferred.
  • Related Work Experience:  At least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Licensure/Certification: Certification from a recognized body such as the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills: 
    • Fluency in relevant foreign language (Spanish)
    • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
    • Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
    • Foreign language (Spanish) written translation skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and sensitive information.
    • Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
    • Ability to work outside of normal working hours as needed.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills

Compensation: $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
